York City – Bootham Crescent

bootham-crescent-york-city

The Bootham Crescent ground has a capacity of 7,800, with seating for 3,400. The home of the Minstermen has seen little investment for many years and is beginning to look jaded. The Main Stand is all-seater, running for about ⅔ of the pitch length, with windshields at the rear. On the opposite side is the small, covered Popular Stand. Behind one goal is the covered terrace of the David Longhurst Stand. At the other end, the Grosvenor Road End is an open terrace allocated to away fans. It has a capacity slightly in excess of 2,000, although if there is sufficient demand, some 300 seats in the Popular Stand can be allocated to travelling fans.

How to Get to the Bootham Crescent Stadium

By Roadmotorway

For satnav purposes, the postal address of the ground is Bootham Crescent, York YO30 7AQ.

Away fans driving from the South should follow the A1, joining the A64 and following signage for Scarborough and York. Upon nearing York, take the A1237 Ring Road and follow it as far as its junction with the A19. Turn right towards the city centre and continue as far as the Burton Stone Inn (on the left). Take the next left into Burton Stone Lane and the next right into Grosvenor Road for the stadium.

Drivers arriving from the North via the A1 should pick up the A19, after which directions are as above.

By Railrail

Walking from York railway station to the stadium takes a minimum of 20 minutes. Travelling supporters wishing to get a taxi to the ground should allow plenty of time for the journey as York traffic becomes very congested on a Saturday.

For energetic fans, the following walking route is advised: Exit the station via the adjoining car park onto the new footpath that passes near the Post Office building. Turn left, left again upon reaching the river and go over the Ouse Bridge. Turn left at the Abbey Guest House, following the footpath to the far end of the Marygate car park. When the path passes under the railway, turn right (Bootham Terrace) and climb the hill to the main road. Turn left, cross to the other side of the road and take the first right into Bootham Crescent for the ground. Click here to check the current train timetables

Where to Park?parking

Those arriving early may be able to take advantage of the limited on-street parking in the side streets running off Burton Stone Lane. A word of warning – several residents’ only parking schemes operate near the Bootham Crescent ground and it is all too easy to pick up a parking ticket, as many fans have found to their cost. A safer option is to use one of the “pay & display” car parks near the city centre and walk back to the stadium.

Away Friendly Pubs Near Bootham Crescent

pint

Situated at the corner overlooking the Grosvenor Road Terrace, the supporters’ club admits away supporters and reportedly serves excellent real ales. Otherwise, the nearest away-friendly pub is the Burton Stone Inn, visible from the A19 upon nearing the ground (see “By Road,” above). However, it is very popular and can become overcrowded on match days.

For those seeking somewhere quieter, the Old Grey Mare, further down the A19 from the city centre, has received good reviews. Real ale aficionados with plenty of time are advised to take the 15-minute walk up the A19 to the city centre. In the old town is the Three Legged Mare. This small, contemporary bar offers a range of York Brewery real ales, along with assorted bottled beers and lagers.

Eating and drinking is well catered for with a restaurant and lounge bar, along with 24-hour room service. Well-appointed guestrooms have Internet access, plasma TVs with satellite channels and direct-dial phones. There is free, on-site guest parking.

Having recently visited Bootham Crescent as an away supporter I found the atmosphere more than friendly, however, the open stand accommodation for away visitors is somewhat primitive for this day and age.
