Rotherham United – Don Valley Stadium

Rotherham United played for over 100 years at the Millmoor ground.

However, the club were unable to agree rental terms, resulting in their temporary move to the Don Valley Stadium in the neighbouring city of Sheffield whilst their new stadium is built in Rotherham.

Rotherham will play at the ground until 2011. The Football League have stipulated that the club must return to Rotherham by that time. The Don Stadium was built to host the World Student Games of 1991 and is the largest athletics stadium in the UK, with a seated capacity of 25,000.

The Main Stand has a capacity of 10,000, plus separate blocks of seating on both sides, one of which is allocated to away supporters. The remainder of the stadium comprises of open blocks of seating on all sides, with large access aisles, as the stadium is also used as a music venue.

By Roadmotorway

The Don Valley Stadium is located in Worksop Road, Sheffield S9 3TL.

Drivers arriving from all routes should exit the M1 motorway at junction 34 (Sheffield Meadowhall). At the roundabout, follow signs for A6178 / City Centre / Attercliffe. Go past Meadowhall Shopping Centre on your right. Keep straight on the A6178 (Attercliffe Road). The Don Valley Stadium is signposted thereafter. Go past the stadium to the traffic lights and turn left into Worksop Road. Take the 2nd left for the stadium car park. As junction 34 is also the turnoff for the popular Meadowhall Shopping Centre, traffic leaving the motorway is usually heavy, so visiting fans are advised to allow plenty of time for the journey.

What Have Other Away Fans Said About Their Trip?
fans

Visiting fans have been surprised on entering the ground, as the stadium is sunk into the ground, so fans enter at a level about halfway up the Main Stand. Tickets for the upper tier of the stand are more expensive, but visitors report that the view and the prospect of being undercover is well worth the extra cost.

Most away fans report the running track surrounding the pitch as a pain but seem to accept that it cannot be helped. Legroom in the seating is reportedly excellent and the stewards adopt a relaxed approach. Despite decent acoustics in the away section, the atmosphere inside the ground is virtually non-existent, due to small crowds in a virtually empty stadium. The facilities inside the stadium are modern and clean. Visitors report that the club have done a good job in setting up a makeshift bar, which is usually adequate in terms of space and serving time.

Catering consists of good quality pies and sausage rolls, while draught lager, bitter and cider is also available.
