Manchester United – Old Trafford

Old Trafford, home of Manchester United, is one of the most famous football grounds in the world. It is an all-seater stadium, with a capacity just shy of 76,000.

Away supporters are placed in one corner of the ground, the East and South (main) stands. Old Trafford has some idiosyncratic features such as the elevated playing surface, which the players access from the corner of the South Stand.

Outside the stadium, a statue of Sir Matt Busby is located in front of the East Stand, along with a plaque commemorating the Munich air disaster of February 1958.

On the other side of Sir Matt Busby Way is a statue of United’s “Holy Trinity” of George Best, Bobby Charlton and Denis Law.

What do fans think of Old Trafford

Away fans have been just about universal in their praise for the excellent view of play from the away sections. Most recommended obtaining upper-tier tickets, if available, with the view described as “fantastic.”

Amazing is the only word for it. It really is the stadium of dreams. Although I have only been once, and that was many years ago, I still remember it to this day and I will remember it forever. The atmosphere is just totally electric and you feel like you are part of something amazing. Ben from Lincoln.

Old Trafford History

The Old Trafford stadium, often known as “The Theatre of Dreams,” first opened its doors on February 19, 1910, with a seating capacity of 80,000. Old Trafford was utilised by the military as a depot during WWII and was seriously damaged by a German bombing attack on March 11, 1941.

Following the war, the stadium was repaired and reopened on August 24, 1949.

Floodlighting was installed in 1957, allowing evening matches, and a project to cover the stands with roofs was finished in 1959.

Capacity at Old Trafford reached 56,385 in 1985 after a series of extensions in the 1960s, 1970s, and early 1980s. The stadium’s capacity was decreased to around 44,000 by 1992 after it was converted to an all-seater configuration, the lowest in its history. Following that, Manchester United proceeded to extend capacity across the stadium, increasing capacity to around 58,000 in 1996, 68,000 in 2000, and 76,000 in 2006. Old Trafford has a current capacity of 75,454.

Old Trafford has hosted an FA Cup Final, two final replays, and has been a neutral venue for the competition’s semi-finals on other occasions.

It has also hosted England matches, matches at the 1966 World Cup, Euro 96, and the 2012 Summer Olympics, including for the first time in its existence, women’s international football, and the 2003 Champions League Final.

Outside of football, it has hosted the Super League Grand Final every year except 2020, as well as the Rugby League World Cup finals in 2000 and 2013. United has called Old Trafford home since 1910, though the team shared Maine Road with Man City from 1941 to 1949 due to the Second World War.

In September 1994, an edition of Songs of Praise was recorded there.

Private occasions, such as weddings, Christmas parties, and business conferences, are frequently held at Old Trafford. In February 1996, the Premier Suite hosted the first wedding at the facility.

Old Trafford Stadium Tours

The Museum is available to the public, and the Stadium Tour takes you through the players’ tunnel, along with a walk beside the world-famous pitch and a visit to the dugouts, before ending with a view from the Ability Platform. There will also be lots of opportunities for photographs.

Museum and Stadium Tours are open from 9:30 a.m. to 16:00 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, except on home matchdays when it is closed.

The tour prices are listed below:

  • Prebooked adult – £25
  • Junior/Concession – £18+
  • Education Groups – £5+

Free parking is also available on car park E2.

We recommend booking online ahead of time to minimise disappointment as well as to save £2 per person above walk-up costs. On the day of the event, bring a printed copy of your print-at-home ticket. You can also make a booking by contacting +44 161 676 7770.

I came here as a late Christmas present and had a wonderful time, the history of the place and the events that have gone on there was overwhelming. The tour is absolutely recommended and the museum is worth every penny.
