Chelsea – Stamford Bridge

Stamford Bridge is an all-seater stadium with a capacity of 42,500 and home to Chelsea Football Club

Much rebuilding work has taken place in recent years. The old three-tiered East Stand, dating from the early 1970s has been retained, but the remaining three sides of the stadium now offer new stands, totally enclosing the ground.

The West Stand also offers three tiers, with a (virtually) transparent roof allowing plenty of light to reach the pitch. The North (Matthew Harding) and South (Shed End) Stands are now both two-tiered, with away fans allocated the lower tier and part of the upper tier of the Shed End for league games, and the whole of the Shed End for cup games.

Stamford Bridge History

On April 28, 1877, the Bridge became a sporting arena. For the first 27 years of its existence, it was virtually entirely dedicated to the London Athletic Club’s traditional Victorian pursuit of athletics meetings.

Mr Henry Ausgustus (Gus) Mears and his brother, Mr J T Mears, acquired the deeds to the modest ground in 1904, having previously acquired additional land (formerly a large market garden) with the intention of hosting a newer sport they had fallen in love with – football – which had swept the north of England and the Midlands and was rapidly growing in interest in the cap.

The stadium’s capacity was originally set at 100,000, making it the country’s second-largest behind the deteriorating Crystal Palace stadium in south London, which hosted the FA Cup final at the time.

Initially, Fulham FC, a local team, was offered the stadium to play in. They declined the offer, and so a new club, Chelsea Football Club, was formed in March 1905 and moved into the new Stamford Bridge stadium a few months later for the start of the season.

With a 60,000-strong attendance in the first year, promotion to Football League Division One after two years, and three FA Cup finals staged there between 1920 and 1922, it was rapidly a success.

Stamford Bridge Reviews

We took the Stadium Tour last week and had a great time. It is great to see behind the scenes at Chelsea. We visited the press room, changing rooms and got to complete the tunnel walk and sit in both dugouts. In addition there’s access to the Chelsea museum and the opportunity to have your photo taken with both Champions League trophies….the only place in London you can do this 🙂 Our guide was extremely knowledgeable about the club and shared inside information. I’d definitely recommend visiting if your a football fan.

Came to Stamford bridge at the age of 8 years old, guess what it was Chelsea v man United, my dad had no idea about football and football crowds but lifted me on his shoulders, where I saw George best take on players in his way, my favourite player was Charlie Cooke who took the ball from him, George best was by far the most talented footballer in that era, packed lunch and at the turnstiles at 1PM, offered a trial at Ipswich under Bobby Robson but my running and swimming seemed more important did eventually play senior football
